The Roots Of War
Roots of War Seminar Reflection
Alicia Armstrong
1. During the Socratic seminar Mikael Oliger said, “ We can’t abolish war because it comes from conflict, which is part of human nature.”
I strongly agree that war is part of human nature, but I don’t believe that it only comes from conflict. I believe that we must first define what war is to actually figure out where it comes from. I also believe that there are two types of war, war of destruction, and war in general. War of destruction is where killing and well destructions play a huge part. War in general is a disagreement that may occur within yourself or with someone else, but it’s a conflict that doesn’t have need for destruction, but is still pretty hard, and violent, mentally. I believe war not only comes from conflict, but it comes from fear, and the want/need for more, war is in all of us its in nature, animals all participate in war. It’s bigger than anything, its life.
2. What is war? Do humans really just use war as an easy way out? The seminar really challenges my mind with these questions; I say challenges because I am still pondering the thoughts in my mind and I have come to few answers but it is deep stuff, so deep thinking. The seminar has challenged my mind to thinking deeper about this topic, and any other for that matter.
3. This seminar really brought me back to brave new world, because both articles clearly state we cant ever get rid of war, but in BNW they found away to come pretty close, by soma, and conditioning. I think that’s probably another reason why Ford did what he did to get rid of war, and conflict and to have some peace/happiness in the world where everyone does agree with everyone, and where life really is happier. Even though you and I may say they really don’t feel happiness, they feel a drug. They are still pretty close and have made more progress then we are trying to do now.
4. I believe I was great in communication I was one of the kids who really participated in talking to everyone and getting my ideas out there. I did invite Zack M, and Allie T, in the conversation because they were just sitting there so I tried to get them to participate. I also came up with the idea of where war came from, through fear, and the want/need to have more.
